CALHOON UNIVERSITY
Program and Text by Bob Markland
Don't let those fantastic career opportunities slip through your
fingers. In the privacy of your home you can earn a Master of Esoterica
degree from CALHOON UNIVERSITY!
In just a few short years, under the expert tutelage of Professor
Emeritus Knees Calhoon, we guarantee that you'll know practically
everything about absolutely nothing. With this Masters degree and fifty
cents you'll be prepared to buy a cup of coffee in most places. Don't wait
another second! The future is yours.
In keeping with the philosophy that life at LOADSTAR should imitate
life somewhere else in the world, Professor Calhoon has selected TV TRIVIA
101 as a more or less logical starting point. With the proliferation of
cable channels this is a subject that is certainly near if not dear to us.
We will be offering other courses (quizzes) in the future.
At CALHOON UNIVERSITY each quiz consists of up to 100 questions and
offers 4 multiple choice answers. Use CRSR DOWN/UP to highlight the
correct answer and press RETURN to enter your choice. Or sit back in your
favorite chair and use a joystick in Port #2. Select and enter your choice
with DOWN, UP and FIRE.
Questions are presented in a different random order each time the
program is run to enhance learning value. In addition to the questions and
answers the screen display indicates the number of questions presented, the
previous high score, the point value for the current question and the
cumulative score for the current quiz.
The scoring system rewards consistently correct answers. The point
value begins at 1. With each correct answer the point value is increased
by one. An incorrect answer resets the point value. There is no further
penalty for incorrect answers and the quiz continues until all questions
have been answered. The valedictorian will score 5050 points on a 100
question quiz.
Following each quiz the Dean's List displays the top 10 students. If
your score qualifies you for honors a cursor appears on the appropriate
line so that you may enter your name. Type from 1 to 10 characters and
press RETURN to record your score.
NOTE: One of the neatest things about Calhoon University is its "student-
controlled Dean's List". If, at any time, you don't like the Dean's List,
just scratch the file "tvt1.dean list" from the disk and the next time you
run the quiz, it'll start with a clean slate. Too bad you can't do this at
Princeton or Cornell!
You can quit a quiz at any time by pressing Q but you can only make the
Dean's List by answering all 100 questions. When you press Q the Dean's
List is displayed and you can:
(a) Continue with the same quiz
(b) Start a new quiz (same quiz but in different order)
(c) Quit to LS 128 if there's a LOADSTAR disk in the current drive.
That's your orientation to CALHOON UNIVERSITY, where all the coeds are
healthy, all the frat boys are brilliant, and all of the teachers spend
their vacations hunting down Nazi antiquities with bullwhips.
FENDER'S POSTMUMBLE: Sounds like the kind of college I should have gone to.
If you are interested in becoming a Professor at CALHOON U, check out the
file "cu.tv trivia 101" to see how a quiz should be formatted. Use an 80-
column word processor and start your file with:
(filename) In this case, it's "tvt1."
Calhoon University
(quiz's 'pretty' name) In this case it's "Television Trivia 101
(two or more blank lines)
Then make each question follow this system:
Q-1 Question number (next one would be Q-2)
#d Correct answer preceded by #
Question You have a maximum of 320 characters for your question
* Asterisk on line by itself means "end of question"
answer 1 (All answers must be shorter than 24 characters in length)
answer 2
answer 3
answer 4
(blank line)
Set the left, top and bottom margins for 0. The right margin can be
between 0 and 5. Print it to disk as a PETASCII PRG or SEQ file and test
it with CALHOON UNIVERSITY. Substitute the name of your quiz in line 70 of
the BASIC part of the program, named "calhoon u". Give it a "cu." prefix
so when Bob comes out with his next version of CALHOON U, his program's
file requestor will find it.
